CHARACTER DANCE

Character dance is a derivation of classical ballet. It is a stylized form of traditional folk dance or national dance mostly from European countries. Character dance is an integral part of the classical ballet repertoire. Some examples of character dance can be found in Swan Lake Act III, Don Quixote, Ballet Paquita, The Nutcracker, and many other famous ballets. Popular character dance adaptations for ballet include the national dances of Hungary, Poland, Russia, Romania, Italy, Spain and Greece. Dances like csardas, mazurka, tarantella, flamenco, barbuncu, crihalma, zorba, sirtaki are all forms of traditional national Character dance. One of the best-known schools that incorporates character dance into their teaching syllabus is the Vaganova Ballet Academy. There are not many places outside of Russia that still teach character dance. However, it is still taught in the United Kingdom at the Royal Ballet School, in Australia at the Australian Ballet School, in the Czech Republic at the Royal Acadamy of Dance, in Romania at The School of Choreography, and in the United States at SAS School of Dance. The term ‘character dance’ is often used in very misleading ways and has no relationship to the original definition of character dance that is used and practiced in classical Vaganova ballet. This class is for intermediate and advanced ballet students. Prerequisite: Three years of ballet training and Ballet-3 level dancer.
